GLOSSARY

Automation-compatible mail

Justin WinterBy · Updated August 28, 2026

Mail prepared to USPS specifications — correct size, a valid barcode, standardized address placement — so it can be sorted entirely by machine, which qualifies it for lower postage rates.

USPS charges less to process mail its equipment can read and sort without human intervention: the right paper stock and envelope dimensions, a correctly encoded Intelligent Mail Barcode, and an address printed where scanning equipment expects to find it.

A piece that fails any of those checks can still be delivered, but usually loses the automation discount and gets routed through slower, non-automated handling instead.

See also

  • Intelligent Mail barcode The USPS barcode printed on letter mail that encodes routing and a unique piece identifier, enabling automation rates and tracking.
  • Presort Sorting mail into ZIP code order, and grouping it into USPS-defined batches, before it is entered into the mail stream — required for many commercial discount rates.
  • Delivery Point Validation A USPS check that confirms an address is a real, individually deliverable delivery point — down to the apartment or suite.
